“I don’t know what I want to do”

We talk to a lot of business owners who don’t know if they really want to sell. Perhaps their business has plateaued or shortage of capital inhibits growth, or the pressures from competition and responsibility are threatening “burn-out”.

Yet these owners are getting a great return on their investment – far better than they will get from property or shares – and are not sure what they can do where they sell out.

In the latest International Business Brokers News there is an excellent article by George Petrulis who advocates a different approach in these circumstances. Normally we act as the seller’s agent. Occasionally we act as buyer’s agent. George suggests that we can position the owner not as a seller or buyer but as seeking strategic options.

With this approach the owner can consider a merger, or growing through acquisition, taking in an equity partner, or various exit strategies.

All of these options may have attractions and may enthuse or revitalise the owner through new challenges. Running your own business is hard work. With most there are no, or few, layers of management. All decisions and responsibility tend to fall on the owner.

Both mergers and acquisitions can increase revenues and bring in support management. Bringing in an equity partner with complementary skills can provide capital for further growth while simultaneously reducing the owner’s workload. We hold a sharebroker’s licence and have facilitated a number of successful partnerships.

This “option seeking” approach has merit and could produce an interesting solution to the uncertain owner’s problem. We will happy to discuss it fully with business owners or their professional advisors.
